Lawrence has been a full time Consultant in Obstetrics and Fetal Medicine in Oxford since 2001 and working in maternity care for over 30 years. He is dual-qualified in general obstetrics and in gynaecology and as a subspecialist in maternal and fetal medicine. Educated at Oxford University and University College in London, he is director of sub-specialty training in maternal and fetal medicine, and for high risk services in Oxford. He is also the clinical network lead for Health Innovation Oxford and Thames Valley (formerly AHSN) maternity and neonatal programme. He is the author of the leading medical student textbook in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, now co-authored with Tim Child in its fifth edition (2017). He is also co-senior editor of the Oxford Handbook of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRCOG) in 2007. He has published and lectured widely in high risk obstetrics and in recognition of this has been awarded a full visiting professorship at Oxford University.
