What does it involve?

If you opt to have our NIPT package, Mr Impey or Dr Ioannou will first explain the process to you and make sure that this is the right test for you. They will then perform a detailed ultrasound scan. Following this they will draw the blood sample and send it to the laboratory for analysis. The result will take around 10 working days and will be sent to you. If you receive a "high probability" result, then it is probable that the baby has Down’s syndrome, but it is not certain. You would still need to have a diagnostic test (CVS or amniocentesis) in order to know for sure.

Can I have NIPT without the scan?

We always offer counselling before the test and then a detailed fetal scan before taking the blood sample. The scan is required in order to confirm that NIPT is the most appropriate test for your pregnancy. In some instances - especially if a problem in the fetus is suspected - a different test such as a CVS or amniocentesis may be recommended.
